Course Description: The Choir at FALA is a performance-based class intended to give vocalists experience with a large group. Our choir will sing many ranges of music styles, from ancient to modern. Students will also be encouraged to compose music for the choir. The focus of the course includes sight-singing, solfege, music history, vocal technique, contest participation, concert performances, and basic theory. All course requirements are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards for the Arts. Evaluation is based on participation, effort, part checks, and written and vocal examinations.

Course Objectives:

· Perform as a large group for a variety of audiences.

· Define basic music terminology.

· Demonstrate proper vocal and breathing technique.

· Analyze differences between solo and large group vocal technique.

· Students lead small groups in practicing and problem solving chosen music.

· Perform with expression and technical accuracy.

· Sing numerous pieces of music in various styles.

· Learn solfege and how to apply it to sight reading.

· Sight-read music accurately and expressively.

· Demonstrate the range and expressive possibilities of the voice.

· View a variety of modern performers.

· Compare and describe the influence of music in different cultures.

Concert Dates:

FALA Choir will be performing approximately 6-7 times a year at different venues.

Here is a tentative itinerary for 2010-2011:

October – Braniger/Chase Hall

December – Coconino H.S.

March - Braniger/Chase Hall

May - Braniger/Chase Hall

Concert Policy: FALA choral members are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals! Any missed performance will result in lowering your grade by one letter at the end of the semester. You will be expected to stay for the duration of the performance of all FALA groups. An absence may be excused if a parent contacts Mr. Shay at least 2 weeks in advance, and your grade will not be affected. Proper concert dress will be expected. Students will decide the proper dress for each performance.

Course Requirements/Policies: Refer to the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy Student Handbook for matters of attendance, dress code, and conduct. No food or drink allowed during music class. Water bottles are allowed and encouraged.

Daily Participation - 25%

Music Preparation - 25%

Recording Project - 25%

Concert Performances - 25%

Total - 100%

A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69%
