Course Description: Guitar class is a performance-based class developed to give the instrumentalists small and large group experiences. Its focus includes having the students learn songs and technique in a group environment. Students will learn music from early musical periods to contemporary music. The class will focus on instrument technique, music reading, tablature reading, and basic theory. All course requirements are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards for the Arts. Evaluation is based on participation and effort, part checks, practice logs, written work, and examinations.
Course Objectives:
· Perform guitar music for a variety of audiences.
· Define basic guitar terms.
· Read, write and analyze basic guitar repertoire.
· Demonstrate theory on a guitar.
· Recognize chord structures and chord progressions.
· Identify various notation symbols.
· Recognize major and minor key signatures.
· Arrange music for instruments and/or voice.
· Identify Composers and historical periods of music aurally.
· Analyze and interpret how technology influences music.
· Develop a portfolio demonstrating the progression of skills.
· Record a song on the guitar.
· Utilize internet resources for selecting and learning songs.
· Identify specific material for making informed critical evaluations of the
quality of performances.
Required: Students need to have a guitar (electric or acoustic) for class.
Semester grading is based on:
Daily Participation and Setup - 20%
Assignments - 30%
Weekly Practice Logs - 10%
Composer Report - 10%
Recording Project - 10%
Concert Performances - 20%
Total - 100%
A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69%
FALA Guitar Class will be performing once per semester at Branigar/Chase hall in the Museum of Northern Arizona. Other performances/service learning opportunities will be announced.
Concert Attendance is Mandatory.
Course Requirements/Policies: Refer to the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy Student Handbook for matters of attendance, dress code, and conduct. No food or drink allowed during music class. Water bottles are allowed and encouraged.
Classroom Expectations:
Concert Policy: FALA Musicians are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals! Any missed performance will result in lowering your grade by one letter at the end of the semester. You will be expected to stay for the duration of the performance of all FALA groups. An absence may be excused if a parent contacts Mr. Shay at least 2 weeks in advance, and your grade will not be affected. Proper concert dress will be expected. Students and Mr. Shay will decide the proper dress for each performance.
