Course Description: Jazz Band is a performance-based class developed to give instrumentalists experience in a jazz band setting. Students will be required to prepare music on their own for rehearsal every B day. The class will focus on instrument technique, jazz styles, educated listening, and jazz theory. All course requirements are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards for the Arts. Evaluation is based on participation and effort, part checks, practice logs, written work, and examinations.
Course Objectives:
· Perform jazz music in a combo setting for a variety of audiences.
· Define basic jazz terminology.
? Listen to jazz music and identify artists and styles.
· Perform an improvised solo on jazz changes.
· Build an understanding of altered jazz chords.
· Demonstrate basic scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys..
· Perform in swing, latin, ballad, funk, and rock styles.
· Improvise a solo over a 12 bar blues.
· Demonstrate the range and expressive possibilities of your instrument.
· Identify various roles jazz musicians perform, cite famous jazz musicians,
and describe their activities and achievements.
· Identify specific material for making informed critical evaluations of the
quality of performances.
Concert Dates:
FALA Jazz Band will be performing approximately 6 or more times a year, at various gigs. Here is a tentative concert schedule for 2005-2006
September – The Peaks Retirement Home
October – Braniger/Chase Hall
December – Sinagua H.S.
March - Braniger/Chase Hall
May - Braniger/Chase Hall
Course Requirements/Policies: Refer to the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy Student Handbook for matters of attendance, dress code, and conduct. No food or drink allowed during music class. Water bottles are allowed and encouraged.
Concert Policy: FALA Musicians are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals! Any missed performance will result in lowering your grade by one letter at the end of the semester. You will be expected to stay for the duration of the performance of all FALA groups. An absence may be excused if a parent contacts Mr. Shay at least 2 weeks in advance, and your grade will not be affected. Proper concert dress will be expected. Students will decide the proper dress for each performance.

Daily Participation and Setup - 20%
Rehearsal Etiquette - 30%
Weekly Practice Logs - 10%
Composer Reports - 10%
Recording Project - 10%
Concert Performance - 20%
Total - 100%
A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69%
