Course Description: Class Piano is a performance-based class developed to give the instrumentalists small and large group playing experience. Students will develop beginning piano techniques and the fundamentals of music. In completing this course the student should be able to read beginning piano literature. Lessons will be supplemented with intensive study of famous piano composers and their music. All course objectives are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards for the Arts. Evaluation is based on participation and effort, performances, practice logs, written work, and examinations.

Course Objectives:

? Perform piano/keyboard music for a variety of audiences.

? Understand how to utilize all the workings of basic keyboards.

? Define basic music terminology.

? Read, write and analyze basic music theory.

? Demonstrate theory on a keyboard instrument.

? Recognize chord structures and chord progression.

? Identify various notation symbols.

? Recognize major and minor key signatures.

? Arrange music for instruments and/or voice.

? Identify Composers and historical periods of music aurally.

? Analyze and interpret how technology influences music.

? Develop a portfolio demonstrating the progression of skills.

? Record an original song on a piano or keyboard.

? Utilize internet resources for selecting and learning songs

? Identify specific material for making informed critical evaluations of the

quality of performances.

Required: Students need to have a piano or keyboard at home to practice.

Semester grading is based on:

Daily Participation and Setup - 20%

Assignments - 30%

Weekly Practice Logs - 10%

Composer Report - 10%

Recording Project - 10%

Concert Performance - 20%

Total - 100%

FALA Piano Class will be performing once per semester at Branigar/Chase hall.

Concert Attendance is Mandatory.

Concert Policy: FALA Musicians are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals! Any missed performance will result in lowering your grade by one letter at the end of the semester. You will be expected to stay for the duration of the performance of all FALA groups. An absence may be excused if a parent contacts Mr. Shay at least 2 weeks in advance, and your grade will not be affected. Proper concert dress will be expected. Students and Mr. Shay will decide the proper dress for each performance
