Course Description: Solo and Ensemble Literature is a performance-based class developed to give instrumentalists solo and/or small group experiences. Students will enhance their musical ability by studying the major composers and musical styles. The course will focus on historical to modern genres, large and small ensembles, instrument technique, concert participation, and basic theory. All course requirements are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards for the Arts. Evaluation is based on classroom and concert participation, part checks, portfolios, written work, and examinations.

Course Objectives:

· Perform in solo or small chamber groups for a variety of audiences.

· Analyze musical scores with stylistic and formal understanding.

· Develop and sustain a portfolio of musician and composer reports.

· Develop and sustain a portfolio demonstrating progression of skills.

· Identify Composers and Compositions by listening and memorization.

· Demonstrate basic arpeggios in major and minor keys.

· Perform with improved expression and technical accuracy.

· Compose a piece of music in a given style.

· Demonstrate the range and expressive possibilities of an instrument.

· Identify various roles that musicians perform, cite individuals in these roles, and describe their activities and achievements.

· Identify specific material for making informed critical evaluations of the

quality of performances.

· Explain ways in which music interrelates with other art disciplines.

· Evaluate a performance by comparing it to similar or exemplary models.

· Identify personal future goals through a written work.

Required Materials: Instrument, Resource Folder, Music, and Pencil.

Students need to have an instrument they can practice at home.

FALA Solo Literature Class will be performing once per semester at Branigar/Chase hall.

Concert Attendance is Mandatory.

Course Requirements/Policies: Refer to the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy Student Handbook for matters of attendance, dress code, and conduct. No food or drink allowed during music class. Water bottles are allowed and encouraged.

Semester grading breakdown:

Daily Participation and Setup - 20%

Assignments - 30%

Weekly Practice Logs - 10%

Composer Report - 10%

Recording Project - 10%

Concert Performance - 20%

Total - 100%

A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69%

Concert Policy: FALA Musicians are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals! Any missed performance will result in lowering your grade by one letter at the end of the semester. You will be expected to stay for the duration of the performance of all FALA groups. An absence may be excused if a parent contacts Mr. Shay at least 2 weeks in advance, and your grade will not be affected. Proper concert dress will be expected. Students will decide the proper dress for each performance.
