S.H.A.R.E. - Weeks 1 & 2
- This program will take place during this Liberal Studies section from 1/23-2/8. When the program is complete the general Liberal Studies course for this section will begin
- During this period, students are asked to bring something to read for silent sustained reading. Ms. Rachel will begin class roughly 20 minutes after lunch is over and students will use the 20 minute period to read prior to the S.H.A.R.E. lesson for the day.

Week 5/ Advertising: Determining Subtexts, Appeals, Target Audiences, & Techniques of Persuasion

- Determining the "hidden" value messages in advertisements and the appeals used to relate those messages

Week 6/ Advertising: Techniques of Persuasion - Logos, Pathos, Ethos

- Discussion: What were the most effective techniques to persuade people? How does the target audience impact which techniques will be more persuasive?
- Describe a commercial that you like. Why do you enjoy this commercial? How do you think marketers go about getting information about their target audiences? What methods do you think they use?
Week 7/ Spring Break
Week 8/ Advertising: Selling Your Audience - Focus Groups and Media Kits
- WEDNESDAY:
- View Excerpts from Frontline's Merchants of Cool - Discussion Questions Coinciding with Film
- What makes marketing so difficult? Why is it difficult to market to teens?
- What tactics do you think are okay for companies/ researches to use to figure out what consumeres like? What type of tactics would put you off?
- What is cool hunting? Is it an ethical practice? If so, to what extent?
- FRIDAY:
- Complete magazine analysis
- What is a media kit and how are they used to "sell audiences?"
Week 9/ Advertising: Complications with Marketing to Children
- MONDAY:
- Begin documentary Consuming Kids (via youtube) and begin video guide
- WEDNESDAY:
- Finish film and video guide
- Discussion:
- Why are children more susceptible to marketing? Given such information, do they need further protections? Would creating legislation regarding marketing to children be appropriate or result in the creation of a "nanny state?"

- Begin writing the scripts for your three commercials. Each commercial scripts needs:

- Monday 5/7: 1) Candidate assignments 2)begin determining three issues to focus on
- Wednesday 5/9: 1) determine key swing states to focus; 2), complete your electoral map; 3) determine demographics your candidate might win and find a poll or graph to support your ideas
- Friday 5/11: 1) determine your candidates stance in terms of financing; 2) Explain whether the emergence of Super Pacs will hurt or help your candidate
- Monday 5/14: 1) focus on your issues; start with your top issues and find supportive polls, graphs, and articles that suggest this is an important issue 2) once your analysis is complete for the first issue, move on to the next
- Wednesday 5/16: 1) once you have gathered enough info to analyze you issues, finalize your powerpoint. Make sure that you have used at least 2 graphs and 2 polls in your presentation and make sure to incorporate your electoral map. Your issues should have visual aids to support your arguments. 2) When all else is done, get to work on your candidate banner. Make it simple and supportive.
- Monday 5/21: Presentations! I will also select who will present for the Future Open House on the 22nd.
Community Service Learning Project: May 23 - June 6
- Objectives:
- Understand the connection between human geography and immigration policies
- Explain the impact of US immigration policies on border crossers
- To make at least 100 hygience kits for the non-profit organization No More Deaths, which will be delivered by seniors in the fall of the upcoming school year
