Monday, January 31st: Go over exams and semester grades. Begin Evolution Unit. Geologic Time Line Activity. HW: Study Geologic Time

Wednesday, February 2nd: Review geologic time. Notes on evidence for evolution that Darwin had available to him. HW: Study what Darwin knew.

Friday, February 4th: Finish notes on evidence for evolution. Complete Biochemical similarities activity. HW: Finish activity if it is not completed in class. Study the notes for evidence of evolution. A pdf of the notes is available here.

Monday, February 7th Gwen Waring presentation on Ecology of Buffalo Park. Review geologic time, and evidence for evolution that Darwin had available to him.

Wednesday, February 9th What people and ideas influenced Darwin? Analyze summaries of Lamarck, Lyell, Malthus, and Wallace to determine how they influenced Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Differentiate between what Darwin had available to him and what is newer to science. HW: Study new information that Darwin didn’t have available to him. Complete Biochemical Similarity activity if not done in clas.

Monday, February 14th What are the mechanisms for evolution by natural selection? Bird Beak Lab: Imitate birds with different beaks to determine how different adaptations are more successful with certain foods. HW: Begin studying for test on Friday.

Wednesday, February 16th Discuss and turn in lab write-ups. How are new species created? Founder Effect activity on traits, genetic composition of a population, and natural selection. Mouse Genetics movie clip. Review for Test on Friday over Evolution by Natural Selection. HW: Study for test on Friday.

Friday, February 18th Test on Evolution by Natural Selection. How does extinction occur? What are patterns of extinction? How has extinction changed the palette of life? Mark extinction events on their geologic time-line, and look for a pattern in the extinction events. Discuss how extinction leaves niches available for new organisms.
